Approximately 5 million cats and dogs are euthanized in the United States every year. In 2003, approximately 40 percent of animals that entered New Jersey's pounds were euthanized - 4,000 per month. That came to approximately 50,000 dogs and cats, which is about 7,000 more than in 2002. Unless we all do our part, the number will continue to grow.

Many of the animals who were euthanized were healthy and adoptable, but there are not enough homes for them. You must help to end this tragedy, which is both costly and heartbreaking, by spaying and neutering your dogs and cats.

According to Brenda Griffin, the director of clinical programs in shelter medicine at the Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine, the number ONE risk factor for a pet being taken to a shelter is that is has not been spayed or neutered.

Widespread spaying and neutering will not only help to end the suffering of unwanted cats and dogs, but it will also offer benefits to you and your animals:

Widespread Spaying And Neutering Will Not Only Help To End The Suffering Of Cats And Dogs, But It Will Also Offer Benefits to Your Animals:

n   Animals that are spayed and neutered live longer, healthier lives. It is now recommended that cats be spayed at 5 months, because female cats are sexually mature and may even have had litters by 6 months.
n   Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the number of health problems that can be difficult or expensive to treat, including the various cancers of the reproductive organs.
n   Animals that are spayed and neutered are more affectionate and exhibit less behavior problems. Cats, for example, are less likely to roam, fight, or spray to mark territory.
n   Animals that are spayed and neutered are much less likely to bite.
